Covid 19 Community Food Relief Program – May 24, 2020 Update
Since early April, Rescate has been working in collaboration with Castaway Kids, Rotary, the San Carlos Community Church, and many volunteers to supply over 150 weekly “despensas” (food hampers) to families living in our area who are affected by COVID-19 closures and layoffs. Our Rescate auxiliary has been working so hard every week sorting food and filling despensas for families in need!
Each despensa contains enough basic food and supplies to feed and maintain a family of four for a week. They contain traditional dry Mexican staples (beans, lentils, rice, etc…), eggs, and some fresh vegetables as well as soap and cleaning agents. Diapers and feminine hygiene products are available if requested. In many cases, the families we are helping do not have refrigeration so we have specifically chosen items that will last for a week and sustain the family.
We have received many donations from within Mexico and all over Canada and the US. We are now helping to feed over 600 people in the Ranchitos, Loma del Mar, El Renacimiento, Guaymas Norte, Fatima, Santa Clara, San Jose and other areas of Guaymas.
Special thanks to Jesus and Daniel at Santa Rosa Market who have been immensely supportive by donating and obtaining supplies for us at their cost. Thank you Santa Rosa Market! Special thanks also go out to Mark Mulligan who, through his Monday FaceBook live shows and raffles, raised $13,000 USD to help feed those in need.
Additionally, our Rescate auxiliary, under the leadership of President Beverly Smith, has been assisting with organizing and distributing food with Feed San Carlos, spearheaded by Greg & Elizabeth Hovey of the Dragon Fruit Farm and working in conjunction with Esmeralda Medina. For the past 5 weeks this amazing team of people have filled about 600 bags of produce, rice, beans and boxed milk per week.
These programs have been amazing team efforts from the donors to the collaborating organizations and volunteers! Together we are feeding those most in need in our community. Thank you to everyone who has helped out financially and / or physically!
